AFAIK there's no default side for the Gripper, I used to have one, but after riding three constructive century for three days, it got to the point that it's plain annoying flipping it round.
they're pretty stiff which helped to stop it spinning around trying to put your feet on the flat.
Seemed to work brilliantly for you Max.
