Yeah I wear mitts and sometimes no gloves, I think sweat does bad things to bike bits. I've had a couple sets of soft touch and neither lasted more than 1000 miles. Friends have found the same and at points all our handlebars were covered in leccy tape to hold the bastard stuff together.
My LBS doesn't stock it any more because (in their words) "It looks great for two months then disintegrates". It wears on the tops behind the hoods 1st.
