  • Just clone your OS drive?

Does that actually work? I remember using Norton Ghost about 10 years ago but I can't really remember if it was successful or not.

I'd be worried some of my more esoteric apps have stupid copy protection that cloning might break.

    Not sure.

    #paranoid

  • we use ghost in work all the time, it works perfectly.

  • £40 bargain http://uk.norton.com/ghost/
Might see if there's something similar kicking about here first.

  • There's other ones you can get for free before you go paying out for that!

    I don't mean illegal either.

  • i've used clonezilla too without a problem

  • Free ones that are as simple? I can't be messing about for days with it.

  • Clonezilla's the free one isn't it? That's the one I'll use.

Also because I'll need to make my HDD smaller before I clone it what's the best way to do that? Can I move steam over to another drive easily enough, then back again as that drive will be my game drive?

My plan is to use the SSD for OS and possibly other apps then have one drive for games and another for media - pictures, movies, music.

When I clone the drive can I just select to clone the windows part? Or will it copy everything?

  • Usually bit-level copies aren't they so you'd get everything. Hence "clone" rather than "copy".
If you just want files off it can't you copy them elsewhere and do a reinstall?

  • I think at the moment I'll have to clear my current C drive down to 110GB then clone it.

This will mean moving a lot of stuff over to the current storage drive. Hmmm maybe I'll leave it a little while first!

Although thinking about it, it would probably do me good to clear my computer and start again -- apart from download games which takes hours.

  • spenceey, moving steam is simple, all you do is copy the steam apps file. But youll have to redownload the client, and reset the steam apps directory.

  • Took receipt of one of these yesterday:

Most noticable performance upgrade I've experienced since the day when I installed a 6600GT in my old rig.

  • Can I build a better gaming PC than this for the money?

Not for me It's for a friend - I have no knowledge of AMD systems as mines an I5.

  • For that money, that's a pretty good build.

The only big improvement you could make would be to reduce the disk space and to get a cheap SSD.

  • is it really £35 for 2x4gb memory now? fuck.

  • godwins law

  • or something like that

  • ahh they're using nazi gold on the contacts... makes sense.

  • £140 for a 240 gb ssd, if you fancy it spenceey you can buy my 120gb one and then i'll buy that

  • What's the best bang for buck SATA 2 compatible desktop SSD available over 160GB in size?

Anything I should know about SSD use before I plump for one? I'm thinking about using one for the desktop boot drive (VB - your old machine).

I'll need to image the current boot drive and move that over.

  • hippy's the one who wants an SS drive...

  • Hippy you could get a really good priced SSD if your only after SATA2 Ebuyer had a 120gb for £60 the other day.

Space is the key here to start, I'll mention an SSD to him but as It's for games space is the key.
