Give Nigel at NBS a call and ask his opinion - I blew mine up some years back and he fixed it for a very decent price. There's nothing that technical about these engines and they are pretty robust, you might be surprised when you get inside the engine.
There has been talk of the oil filters spinning off but I thought that was due to a manufacturing issue with the filters. Yes, a jubilee clip can be used but I think the issue has passed now (unless you are using oldish oil filters)
Drop the pan, take a look see whats going on, or do you know what is lunched?
