I pick a BB + crank to give a 45mm chainline

Posted on
  • I have a goldtec rear hub, (which for some reason they have spaced at 45mm.)

    I need a new BB + crank.
Frame is a new BobJackson (std British / I.S.O. BB thread)

    I don't want to spend >£100 total

I'd like a 130 BCD crank, so I can reuse my chainrings
and a crank that can be removed with my std shimano crank extractor.

I like the Sugino RD Messenger Crankset @ £60
    http://www.velodromeshop.net/index.p...roduct&id=1672

but no idea how to get a matching BB of the right size.
Sugino do a 103mm BB - but that will give the std 42mm chainlin
I'm finding the ISO/JIS taper compatability a minefield

2'd hand would be fine too

    help....

  • 103mm should be fine, if you put the ring on the outside of the spider.

  • this seems too easy to be true :o)

surely the chainline is measured from the outside already?

  • Nah Sugino RD as standard has the ring on the inside of the spider, moving it to the outside gives a chainline suitable for a 45mm hub. I know people who've done it.

  • The RD2 with a 103mm bracket gives a 45mm chainline, according to their website.

    more confusion
    I thought the RD2 + the 103mm BB gave a 42mm chainline
    which I interpreted from here:

  • I read it gives the stronglight a 42mm chainline. It fits the the rd2 but it doesn't confirm the chainline.

  • Hope you wont mind if I budge in :)

So basically I'm in the exact opposite position. I have the RD2 + 103 mm BB, which I can confirm gives a 45 mm chainline. Not sure why lots of sites seem to claim 42 mm for the RD2, however the Sugino website seems to be correct.

I'm looking for a 42 mm chainline, could this be achieved by using a 100 mm BB (does such a thing even exist)?

Alternatively, will I need different cranks? If so are there any cranks which give a 42 mm chainline with a 103 mm BB?

Bbhewee you mentioned some Stronglight, do you have a link?

I suppose I could move the chainring in. However, it looks like it'll change the chainline by more than 3 mm. And it doesn't look very good, so that's a temporary solution at best.

combatwombat: Maybe you'd be interested in my RD2s if I need different cranks?

  • What about putting a 3mm spacer before the sprocket?

  • I have the RD2s and a 103mm BB too. Some drivetrain noise I'd like to get rid off - this could be the problem!

Are there any hubs with 45mm chainline out there, besides the Goldtec?

  • sdw: That was what I wanted to do at first as well. However there's not enough thread for a 3 mm spacer on the hubs (that I have at least) and even adding 1-2 mm would be less than optimal.

  • can't you put the chainring on the inside of the crank spider to ge a shorter chainline?

I also see that the Sugino BB has a cup without a flange, so this should permit adjustment of chainline (within a limited range).

  • Buy some nice 2nd hand campag road cranks and convert them with single chainring bolts (or find some already converted for sellz), use a 113mm ISO bottom bracket with a 1mm spacer on the drive side (or a 111mm ISO bb with a 2mm spacer... should be alright) this should give you bang on 45mm... campag will look alot nicer IMO (and be superior quality?)

  • @ArthurFrayn

My understanding is that the ST1000 with a 103bb gives you a 42mm chainline.

    Available from Hubjub

  • Thanks, looks like they're not in production anymore though.

  • Just tried moving the chainring to the inside of the spider. This gave me something like a 40 mm chainline and didn't reduce the noise coming from the chain at all.

Next thing to try will be trying to adjust the BB position a bit, which maybe will get me closer to 42 mm.

I'm starting to wonder if the chainline is really what's causing the noise though.
