Perhaps I'm being an eejit, but is it possible to do the 'harlequin' style thing with padded cork-style tapes? Or is this just for retro flat tapes?
I've been thinking about this. These woven patterns have tape two layers thickness everywhere except for pin-holes of zero layers at the corners. There might be a slight bit more or less overlap as the pattern follows the bend of the bars, but the weaving prevents much deviation from that.
The tapered edges on padded cork tapes would work against you - you'd have full 2-layer thickness in the middle of the diamonds but it would taper down to 1-layer thickness on the edges between diamonds and taper to 0 at the corners.
