I'm not very good at eBay. I put down bids and enter the amount I'm willing to pay. If I get sniped, it's because I wasn't willing to pay it, if I win it's because others weren't willing to pay it. If you've put in what you'd realistically part with, then it doesn't matter if you do it this early or in the last few seconds.
