  • There was a photographer called Toby Melville down at the track on 5th May doing a piece on venues used in the 1948 Olympics for Reuters. If this is you:

    Oh hai! You're on reuters.com

  • Apologies in advance if this has already been covered, is there a fitness test before using the HH velodrome? Or can you go straight out the first time there?

Induction for newbies at noon on Saturday, followed by basic training at 1. Arrive 15 minutes early to register.

  • Actually, this is not right. You have to do the induction and then return a week later for the novice training session, you can no longer go from one directly to the other.

    Change of rules.

  • interesting. when did that happen?

  • Last Saturday I think. They were very insistent about it too.

  • Correct

  • Out of interest, why was this decision made? Too many people, or people too tired four training after the induction?

  • I don't think "too tired" was a consideration. It's mainly numbers and the impact on the quality of the basic training session. If you're too tired after an induction then you should probably find another way to improve your fitness before returning to the track as the induction is physically very easy.
If you have 50 inductees and they all want to stay on for the basic session, it means nobody else will be able to sign on for the basic session.
As many inductees are just there for the experience, and don't return often, if at all, it's unfair to those who regularly participate in the basic session to lump them with a load of newbs.
The strain on hire bikes is also significant.

  • Fair enough, I haven't done the induction and didn't really know what it entailed. Weather permitting I'll be down on Saturday and was hoping to do both, but I'm happy to wait until the following week to start the training.

  • Good decision I think

  • Actually I've changed my mind, I'm going to throw my weight around and give it the "don't you know who I am?" instead, it might make the coaches' morning pass a bit quicker.

  • I believe a a certain group of people have already used that line there.

  • CS Grupetto?

  • didn't have them in mind, but probably.

  • LOL LOL ROFL LMFAO LOL WAC etc etc....

  • Struggling to motivate myself to come to the track at the moment.

Had a "it's just riding round in fucking circles isn't it" moment last time out and with weather etc not been back and have been loving being on the road + the crits I did.

    hmmmmm.

  • CS Grupetto?

That's it. The short one with the moustache was a right troublemaker.

  • My shoulder is sore from coasteering last weekend and I've tried to rest it, I'm desperate to get back on track but I feel I've got to have a little time off the bike... Still not sure if I should risk it.

Might just get hammered to tonight and take the decision away

  • ^this sometimes doesn't take the decision away, instead makes the saturday laps more unpleasant.
    just so you know.

  • I think that's a good development (the inductee > basic transition) for the likes of me, who will probably never get past the level of basic, to at least have a relatively smoother start to the hour.

What's the sitch with some Intermediates hanging on to ride the basic too? Sometimes a bit fast for us, I wonder why they bother. Having said that it's good to have a little pace to get us slowcoaches going a bit.

This isn't allowed. And a bit pointless TBH, it's another way to dilute the quality of the basic session.
Please point out those doing this to the coaches, personally I don't have a problem with asking people to leave if they are doing this.

  • Perhaps they re-evaluated their competence during the intermediate session, deciding they had regressed to, or never actually graduated from a basic level?

That's what I'd say to get more track time anyway.

If they want "more track time" then come to other sessions and races.

Rather selfish isn't it? To deny someone a place who has come especially for the basic session.
