You can drill the hole out slightly larger and tap some new threads to fit a sleeve with the original pedals threads on the inside. We have the sleeves at the Bike Foundry and the engineers round the corner have the taps and would do the work, probably for under £20. Seems like a lot of work though!

That could be good. Still think I may go withy the welding though.
