What ratio for london commuting, new to fixed gear?
anything that gives you around 69 / 70 gi.
if / when you start skidding you'll appreciate a 19 or 17 cog. -

I only got round to measuring mine (oo-er)
48:16 = 81 gear inches on an SS. I find it perfect for London commuting and am going to attempt London-Brighton on it in May. I feel I might be pushing it up a hill or two.

+2.
Lovely speed to pick up to, not so spinny down hills, up hill is fine and with 17 skid patches you take time to wear out your tyre :D

Pfff, 48/19, gear of the gods.
That is what I like for central London anyway, I've been riding 48/17 for longer rides with less traffic and it feels just right.

Riding 48x19 in town and on long rides seems to have improved my comfortable cadence on my road bike. It might be something else causing the improvement but I seem to be a better spinner now.

44x18 today for the Ice Cream Wensdae Audax 108k which I rode from Marple out to the flat lands of Cheshire. My first fixed wheel, auadx and even the heavy showers couldn't spoil it. Now for a 200?

My bike currently has a rear sprocket of 18 teeth and a front chain wheel with 48 teeth and 700C wheels so I think that makes the gear around 70 inches. I find it a bit too low for my liking but it gets me up hills. I think I would prefer about an 85 inch gear and walk up hills.

I ride 52/15, anything less would be too frustrating, I guess it depends on the type of person you are, If you're the type of person who doesn't mind waiting a couple of seconds for a web page to load; go with something like 42/15 but if you've thrown your smart phone against a wall because it took too seconds too long to access your email; go with something with a little torque!

Do you ride everywhere at 28mph?

Doesn't everyone?

Doesn't everyone?
In their minds.
I drove down kingsland road the other day, there were fixiewixies and singleyspeeds everywhere. So to blend in I stayed in the same gear all the way down the road, swerved about a bit and jumped the lights at the bottom.

How much have you ridden with 70GI?
If you ride enough you'll adapt and be able to spin quicker, stay fresh and beast those hills you'd be walking. No bad thing at all.

FYI guys, you're not "spinning" if your cadence is less than 150rpm, simply "riding".
Mr 52/15 would have to go around 28mph to be doing a moderate 100rpm (which is a good cadence to be aiming for on the road) it's risible to hear people saying that 70-80GI is "too spinny".
71.1 inches is brilliant 46/17
