Gilligan's eyes bulge at any prospect however tenuous or invented to smear. He even fucked up a legitimate and important piece of reporting about the Iraq dossier, by desperately trying to incite Alistair Campbell. His journalistic standards resulted in his sources suicide, and brought down the head of the BBC, whence upon Gilligan fell into Boris's arms; a marriage made in heaven.
