Disagree that Spain is THE place for food. Each to their own but Italy seems to have the best all round.
The thing is that in Spain it's very regional - you eat well in the fancy places where the money is (i.e. the North), but in general, Spanish food is average. Meal for the day is usually a slab of meat and some chips.
Seriously? Have you ever been outside any of the major cities in Spain?
I honestly don't think you could be further of the mark. Once you get out of the cities, regardless whether this is a tourist trap or a provincial backwater the food gets better and better and to say that the best food is where the money is smells of ignorance to me, some of the best Spanish dishes are considered "peasant food" plain and simple.
