The thing is that in Spain it's very regional - you eat well in the fancy places where the money is (i.e. the North), but in general, Spanish food is average. Meal for the day is usually a slab of meat and some chips.
Italy however, as in their mastery of most fine things (though not so good on the the unified generalities) is exceptional. This is the country whose soft drinks even come covered with a foil top - San Pellegrino sodas are the best.
On the same note, in Italy you will find many, many good dishes without meat, In Spain this is a rarity. Though not a vegetarian I suspect that restaurants that can cook well without flesh, are usually above par.
Disagree that Spain is THE place for food. Each to their own but Italy seems to have the best all round.
