  • Germans are the archetypal plastics. Watched the Bayern game last night with a few people who I'd watched the Bayern-Dortmund game with last Wednesday, when they were all dying for Dortmund to win. As soon as it's a German team in a European competition, they're all fierce fans again. TV is even worse. If you think English Champions League/football coverage is ridiculous and biased, well it is, but last night after the game their pundits were Franz Beckenbauer (ex-FC Bayern, current honorary president), Phillip Lahm, and then Jupp Heynckes. The presenter spoke of the 'euphoria' they were all feeling, and when they asked Lahm about his defending for the Madrid goal, he sort of smiled awkwardly and gave them a look, and then they dropped it again. Then they asked Özil if despite being on the losing team, he was still happy because his national team captain had set up the winning goal. That's almost chevron worthy.

As one of the guys who was there last night put it, football definitely brings out the inner nationalism that Germans still have!
