From what I've been learning about in my degree all prion diseases are linked to the same misfolded/amyloid form of the PrP protein, and can be transferred by these alone. Having said that, recent studies were done on mice infected with PrPsc (the misfolded form) and the levels of PrPsc do not always correlate with the severity of spongiform neurodegenration.
So if the most recent research can't work out how it works, I think it's best to eradicate the chances of contracting something awful by steering clear of that sort of food. And you certainly shouldn't be portraying the idea on TV to kids that it's OK to try any kind of wierd meat they like!
