For those who are interested/didn't know/haven't googled, Ragged Schools were free schools providing basic education for the destitute in the C19th. Wealthy philanthropists like Angela Burdett-Coutts gave much needed support, as did Charles Dickens.
This one was the largest in London and was set up by Dr Thomas Barnardo
