  • I love my old 70s Fender Pro Reverb, but gigged it Sunday and it was running hot… weird swishy noises coming through at the end… same problem I asked the guy to fix, and he obviously didn't… but mending leaky old caps on valve amps often has you chasing a fault up the chain with no end in sight.

Arf. I had a 70s sf pro reverb too and sold it for exactly the same reasons as you describe.

When i bought it someone had tried to tame the headroom by replacing the EL34s with EL34GAYs (yeah yeah i know) but lord knows what that had done to it up the chain. It was forever conking out, hissing and banging.

It sounded great when it worked though. Like a twin you could push into the gloriously spiky zone at perfect gig levels. Mmmm. unfortunately it was also the same size and a good way towards being the same weight as a twin. When i finally quit my skronky loud band the pro had to go.
