i used to be a massive valve amp snob. in fact i still am and wouldn't really consider using anything else for live or recording. there really is nothing like a decent tube amp* operating in that window of awesomeness where the power amp's being pushed into compression. that's the sound of electric guitar to me. personally i think that amp has greater influence on the end result than the guitar so yep. still an amp snob.
however, modelling's a great tool for noodling at home, demos and generally having bit of fun. i have a pod and would definitley consider something little to use at home alongside the champ. they're so much fun, pretty good sounding, reliable, light and cheap, why wouldn't you?
*i've heard plenty of crappy sounding tube amps too.
