  • 24 March. A Smashing Experience - Picketts Lock

    Every job has perks.
One of the perks of the Norwegian's job is that occasionally he comes back from work with a crate of heavy glasses, usually Hoegarten.
He distributes these to all the boaters in the area.
I am not a fan of these, unless I am at the pub and they come filled appropriately.
When I refused them, he insisted.
    *They're practical, they don't break easy. *
*I have glasses, mine are fine. *
He shrugged and continued to hand them out.

Yesterday the Norwegian took his elderly co-worker out for a cruise.
    They went north.

There's something magical about locks, no matter where you are people always seem to gather and watch when you're going through.
So when they came to Pickett's Lock the Norwegian left his counterpart on the deck and began the process of winding the locks. It was all going smoothy. I can only imagine how his visitor felt watching the Norwegien cofidently jumping across from roof to lock and back effortlessly.
He left his guest incharge and moved the paddles to allow the water in, but it rushed in furiously and tossed the 9 tons of boat mercilessly. The boat tossed and turned and smashed into the sides of the lock. In an effort to calm the flow the Norwegien quickly closed one paddle. The other was stuck, and he was left to watch his panicing friend below.

That evening after explaining the days events he produced a crate of broken glass. The fury of Pickett's lock had ejected the contents of his kitchen cupboards and smashed the six glasses, 3 plates and 1 bowl.

None of my Hoegarten glasses broke he smiles.
