Fixed is often better for rehab. It's 'assisted', and there's less scope for sloppy form, and you tend to do bursts of minor resistance work in a greater variety of functional positions (last bit's not so relevant to upper body injuries, although my wrist healed up more quickly once I got back on the fixed (not a wanking injury)).
