Why would you want to , it knows where you are and therefore what time it is at your location.

  • I'm hiding from the linear nature of time

Excuse me while I refill my glass.

  • How do I pair a Powertap with the 800? I've tried manually and Rescan. Every time I hit rescan it sets the pairing code back to 0 and doesn't seem to get any further.

  • Just had a thought. Maybe that PT hub isn't ANT+. Der! Hang on. .

  • Yep, found TT bike in seconds.

  • I'm tearing my hair out trying to get OSM onto my 800.

Bought micro SD card and reader, downloaded velomaps Great Britain. Followed instruction on Ride with GPS

Installing Free Open Street Map data

Some people purchased an Edge 800 for cheap because it didn't come with Garmin's City Navigator maps installed. This is fine, because there is a complete and comprehensive set of free maps (wikipedia style user-generated maps) from the Open Street Maps project. You can install these maps on a microsd card, and then use your Edge 800 like normal. Better instructions will follow, but here is the gist.

    • *Choose a mapset from this link* - Since I am in North America, I use either *Mantlik's contoured maps or *Dave's
    • *You have to enable data recording on the SD card by changing the settings: Settings > Data Recording > Record to memory card. *
    • Place a blank SD card in your Garmin, turn it on and then start the timer. This will create the proper directories on the SD card automatically. <
    • *Stop the brief activity you just started. Feel free to revert the "Record to memory card" setting once you have started then stopped the timer. *
    • *Plug your Garmin into your computer. Depending on your computer, you will probably be prompted to open a folder to view the files on both the main unit and the SD card. Otherwise, navigate to the drive/folder your computer assigned to your SD card. *
    • *After downloading, copy the IMG file to the SD cards "GARMIN" folder that was created earlier. The SD card can have multiple IMG files on it and you can choose between them in the Edge 800 configuration menu. I kept my names descriptive, "osm_western_us.img". VERY IMPORTANT: keep the name short and free of spaces or odd punctuation - underscores are OK for spaces. *
    • *Once the file is copied, safely remove (right click on the icon in the lower right of screen for Windows users) the SD card from your computer. *
    • Insert the card and power up the Garmin. Go to the configuration menu, then System -> Map -> Map Information, and select the map type.
    • Enjoy!
No chance - no sign of the maps on the unit.

    Any ideas?

  • Had a similar problem. Having some knowledge of using the osm and mapping I knew it was not an error in this.
I formatted the SD card as fat32 and it was not recognized correctly by the 800
Reformatted as fat and the card worked, other cards formatted as fat32 have worked for me.

  • Thanks for this. Card appears to offer FAT32 and exFAT but won't reformat.

  • Do you have a card reader? Put the SD in that and see what is on it.

  • I do and have. The card has the velomaps but the edge doesn't give me the option of using them - only the original basemaps are shown not the newly loaded OSM on the card.

I think when I look back on my life I will recognise this as the point I became an old cunt surpassed by technology.

  • Garmin make lots of things more painful than necessary in order to make money from map sales. If they didn't sell maps the whole process would be a piece of piss.

What was the map file called? It should be gmapsupp.*img if it's on the SD card, which is different to the name it has if it's on the device's internal storage.

  • Will check tonight.

Can you please tell me the name of the velomap file and also its location on the card. It should be directly in the garmin directory.

Please see my previous advice with regard to reformatting the card (after moving the files off it)

  • I have a directory called Garmin with 334mb of something.... double click and it starts to verify etc but no file names I can see.

    Reformat the card.

  • Starting to get somewhere but only the .jar file available on what has downloaded, can't see how to access the 'Mobile Atlas Creator.exe'. When I've opened the mobile atlas creator jar file (supposedly for mac only) I get the program but with warning I only have 63mb available because I've not used the .exe program. Some maps show eg OS explorer but not the more detailed ones.

  • Sorry wrong link but the link I sent you is useful for other functions i.e. custom maps for you to create, here is the link to install openstreetmap and velomaps if you have img files

  • Well somehow I now have an OS map on my edge for which I express my great thanks to you all.

Now I've got that under my belt I can have a play.

    Small donation made

  • Garmin 800. Just got given one. Embrace me, Garminites.

Garmin make lots of things more painful than necessary in order to make money from map sales. If they didn't sell maps the whole process would be a piece of piss [edit]

    Pros.
A handy piece of kit for following routes
Really decent bracket that holds the garmin in place clear readable "front" display showing mph/miles covered/time
Battery lasts for probably 10+ hours (i've only used it for 6)

    Cons
    Expensive
Clunky software (for uploading your routes) - Garmin "connect" is painful
Uploading maps is far from intuitive (see above)
    Not very firefox/mac friendly
[Unknown if it works better on PC/iexplorer browser]

    Tips:
Have someone show you how to use it - trust me on this.
Be clear if you are using it as a heart rate/cadence tool or mapping tool and it might help if you compare a couple of the map options before downloading/purchasing
Purchase a couple of mini-SD cards.
Ride in a group with someone who has one to work out if you need one.

If Garmin don't make their online interface easier I'm sure one of the non-gps makers (like a mobile company) will eat their lunch in a couple of years.

You don't need a garmin to embrace Hippy, but it might help.

  • As per above, I should be getting a garmin quite soon (edge 800) if anyone could come round and spare an hour showing me how it works (as this has been suggested as the best approach) and running me through it (i have a mac, which apparently makes things more tricky) I'd be very grateful and supply with excessive cups of tea/ toast. I'm based in camberwell, near denmark hill.

  • I can show you if you want, bring your bike, mac and garmin to Flat White or somewhere similar and buy me a coffee.

  • Mine worked quite well last weekend. The routes were pretty good.
It needed a reboot after a recalc around 3 hours on Sat. Sun, with no recalcs was fine. The route choice seemed pretty good too.

  • Does anyone have a car charger they want to get rid of?
