The Russians brought that to the Farnborough air show one year. Burned a hole in the runway.

When your opponent has no aircraft and no AA cover above about 5000', you want a bomb truck, not a billion dollar defence systems penetrator. -

Just saw that documentary on more4 about the vulcan raid in the Falklands.
11 refuelling planes refuelling each other so just one could refuel the vulcan was impressive.Didn't like the actual bombing bit or the whole colonial farce for that matter but the mission was pretty amazing.

I read the book about that. Very interesting

I doubt any-one has done anything like that since. Also pretty impressed that no-one crashed, considering how run-down the aircraft were.

Fuck me, fifteen refuelling planes.

USAF B-2 missions of about 16,000 miles round trip have been flown, from their home base in Missouri to Afghanistan and back.

There are lots of KC-135s between the US and the Middle East. Probably simplifies the logistics a bit.

Yes, thats the one. There are two main versions of it, one with VTOL and one without. No prizes for guessing which one has had all the complications. Lots of components have had to be redesigned/re-thought etc. Basically its a total mess and the running costs are going to be phenomenal - now its got to the stage where its literally being pushed though the door into pilot's hands for training in a very dubious state of completion.
Even the F22 has been grounded for long periods just last year to investigate the oxygen supply failing mid-flight causing the pilot to crash... and the canopy coatings peel off in bad weather...
F18s and harriers it is for the next ten years then.
