To reiterate it was a quick 'toot' to create awareness. I often find myself doing this to cyclists to alert them to my presence when I consider (and here is the science bit) it is safer to do so than not. This is when there is a group to avoid this exact situation (an overtake when I'm coming through), when width of road causes me a little concern that I may have to pass close by (although never dangerously as I wouldn't), etc, etc. I couldn't anything more given the circumstances to alleviate danger except not pass, which it was safe to do (before the dork pulled out).
Eitherway I always come back to the point that as cyclists it is OUR responsibility to avoid incident in lieu of the damage that can occur to ourselves and the general lack of attention paid by drivers to other road users.
