Playing with that web app leads me to think that the lacing pattern has no bearing on the gaps in your wheel, it's all much-of-a-muchness once you get to the parallel spokes heading to the rim (the outer third of your wheel near the rim). The only way to make a difference would be to go radial (where spokes work individually and not as parallel pairs) I reckon?
But yeah generally, the fewer crosses the better (as the spokes are more spread out), offset lacing might work, but I'd go with standard 3x and put a small wheel cover on the outer third for the best of every world?
