  • 90° phased tandems have been tried, but 0° phased tandems are much easier to ride out of the saddle, and either 0° or 180° phasing works better than other arrangements because 90° or 270° phasing means the stoker is trying to pedal fast (crank speed is non-uniform through the cycle) when the pilot is pedalling slowly (and vice versa), causing a conflict which unsettles the slower moving member of the pair. 90° phasing is probably better for seated climbing on a touring tandem, where slow cadence can lead to the whole ship coming to a halt during the dead spots.
