But if you want a local drive to back up to I would go with network storage, sell your old mac and get some money for it while its still worth something ;) no point setting up your old mac as a server - with the NAS you can also use some of the space to store movies, music etc

I've thought a lot about these online back up things. I use dropbox a lot, and that works great for current stuff I need to back up (work, photos, etc)
For a everything backup though, I'd need about 750GB's worth of storage, and even if it's financially viable in the cloud, restoring it would take days, and Virgin Media won't be happy...
