    The American architect Louis Sullivan’s now famous maxim Form follows function was one of the primary principles of Modernist architecture and design, and contributed to the geometric reductivism of Modernist painting and sculpture. This language has been revisited a number of times since, but recently artists have responded more irreverently. The result has been to allow very non-Modernists elements into the paradigm: fantasy, absurdity and humour, to re-claim and enrich this once hallowed ground. Some of the artists begin with function and allow its failure to become its form, while others create forms that can only aspire to function.

  • Well, there's a coincidence. I was just about to post.
    The weekend before last Wrongcog was kind enough to let me go to his studio and take some snaps of him at work. And it is work; physical, laborious, dirty and time consuming.
    I'd loved his stuff when he showed it on here and it was a great pleasure to see it being made and to take a few photos.

  • Cheers for posting that link Hoefla. Still adding more to that series for the show. I don't know if I'll be happy until it's hung and there's nothing more I can do. But I'm getting properly excited about seeing this series all in one place.

  • I prefer post war modern british from the 50s and 60s. Check out William Gear, Roy Turner Durrant, Henry Cliffe, Michael Canney, Bernard Farmer to name but a few. I find contemporary stuff crap on the whole, but as someone has said, art is subjective and that is what makes it great.

    *DAMASCUS in LONDON

    Take part in a performance by The17 in London this Sunday

    In March 2011, Bill Drummond was supposed to lead a performance of Score 328: SURROUND around the top of the medieval city walls of Damascus. This was part of a tri-nation festival organised by Reel Festivals. The three nations were to be Syria, Lebanon and Scotland. The Lebanese and Scottish legs of the festival happened. The Arab Spring caused the Syrian leg to be postponed. It was also supposed to be part of The17's City-to-City world tour.

    While Syrians are slaughtered on their city streets and the world looks on wondering what it should do, Reel Festival have decided to organise a festival in waiting with the Syrian refugees and exiles who are currently living in London.

    Between 1pm and 3pm on Sunday, 18 March 2012, Bill Drummond will be leading a performance of the same score as he was going to do in Damascus. This score is usually performed on the circumfrence of a five-kilometre circle. As stated above it was to be performed around the city walls of Damascus, which are also five kilometres in circumference. Drummond has drawn an outline of the Damascus city walls on a map of London and will lead this particular performance following the outline on the streets of London.

    The 100 members of The17 that will be taking part in this performance will be primarily drawn from the Syrian refugee and exile community in the UK. But there may be a few vacancies left. To apply and find out where the rendezvous point is contact surround@reelfestivals.org

    All those taking part get a DAMASCUS in LONDON T-Shirt and pamphlet.*

  • Is there a thread for classical art? Not for the art installation bullshit, and the pathetic rumpled beds or pickled sharks, you know.............sculptures and paintings, and things that are recognisable.

    I don't particularly want to start a new thread, as people are still taking medications regarding jet planes and the like.

    could tell it was a good show as people were actually looking at the work, on opening night no less. was last in there for the Charles Matton exhib so the space felt kinda weird... very well done to you. great to see them up close.

    I've never really seen the reason for the differentiation in values between oil and other mediums. However, if you spend 75, I wouldn't want another 3 to exist, some of which are considered better than the one you bought.

    Having said that, it wasn't that much for a very significant work, and compared to contemporary art, a large Warhol or such, is a "less volatile investment" (can't belive I just wrote that). However I would definitely prefer 10 of these http://www.christies.com/LotFinder/lot_details.aspx?intObjectID=5520523 which went for an unbelievably low price a couple of months ago.
