To be fair, I can remember when I described my old setup to people here and their reaction was even worse!
I had a single front brake like you, but mine was one of those old Magura hydraulic rim brakes, hell of a lot less risk of hose springing a leak (it was a braided hose too).
It all worked fine for me for 6-7yrs with rear gears only on my old MTB framed city bike, but then I did have a hugely grippy 1.35" slick tyre up front.
Meh, horse for courses.
