East London's full of Northerners who read about Shoreditch in Vice 5 years ago and have just saved up enough money selling Hovis and mining coal to get the train down.

Have you taken your medication today?
If by that you mean "have you had your low-fat decaff soyaccinno?", then the answer is yes.

There is a big divide between north & south in France & Germany. In Germany, one of the divisions is confessional: the north is broadly Protestant, and the south Catholic.
In France, the south is known as 'le Midi', which is the same word that the Italians use for the south of Ital (mezzogiorno). The cultural differences from the south to the north may be not quite as marked as in Italy (I'm not at all familiar with Italy) but they are not insignificant. Older people in Provence still remember when Provencal was widely spoken.
Very true. Bavaria used to be a kingdom but I don't think the differences are as stark compared to Spain or Italy, in France the South is actually quite productive and is actually generating a lot of income for the country as opposed to the South in Italy and Spain. I reckon if it came to a referendum in either country the majority of voters would vote in favour to remove their Southern regions from the unions whereas I think this would be unthinkable in either France or Germany.

Errr. One of the enduring problems of the French state, is that the French regions aren't enamoured of Paris, and its historically centralising instincts. It wasn't so long ago that the Bretons were agitating very seriously for seccession.
There would also be many in the North of France who have a low opinion of the work ethic, indeed, ethics in general of the people of the South, whatever the truth of the matter.
I'm not saying it's as extreme as Italy or Spain, but it's definitely there.

They speak funny in the north east of France. The historic industries of textiles and coal make it a little like the north of England and some of the architecture is very similar. Normans drink cider and not wine. Bretons are just odd.

The houses look like German houses in the north east, and the people of Alsace-Lorraine basically are Germans.

There is no 'big divide' in France. There are poorer areas but they're more evenly spread - there's no less well-off 'side'. A dialect dying out doesn't signal a 'not insignificant' difference.

With respect, Provencal was not a dialect.
