I learnt to sail by offering to crew on boats. Perhaps try somewhere local such as Greenwich Yacht Club and see if you can put a notice up on their board?
I've never owned a boat myself but, particularly now I have some sailing experience, the opportunities to sail on other peoples boats are seemingly endless.
Just spent yesterday and today doing the Thames Frostbite Race organised by GYC.
