Right, I have been getting a knee pain of a different variety. This year, rather than a specific pain in my knee while cycling it's when off the bike and sitting, standing, whatever except riding, and it's not so much pain as just a discomfort, feels like something isn't right.. Has anyone experienced this feeling?

Has anyone on here suffered from one knee cap not facing straight? I've got in soles to help but they are only off the shelf ones, booked up a docs appointment for tomorrow, can I just ask for straight referel to the orthopaedics?

Would recommend you get in contact with bluerip on here.

I went to the work doctor the other day, got referred to the work physio, but then found out I'm not covered for that and had to cancel. I've gotten used to it now, in some ways. It's worse when I run, but I stop before it gets really bad and have a rest day between runs.

Spenceey - Patella maltracking is probably the norm for most people and in itself is rarely the direct cause of symptoms. Patella subluxations however (where your knee cap pops around the side of your knee) warrants an Orthopaedic opinion.
Your GP will refer you to Physio (GP dependent) and this will be a suitable starting place.
PM if you have any specific concerns.

Put it this way if I put my right foot flat on the floor the knee cap is at 11oclock, over time cycling and running this is now significantly worse, last year I put some sport in soles in which moved the knee cap back a little but not back to where it should be (straight ahead).
At first this was just a pain when cycling and or running but now I'm at the point where I have to walk on the outside of my foot even when walking.
I'd love to pay you a visit and be supporting a member of the forum bluerip but I'm not living in London I'm afraid :(

Visited doctors, been refereed to a physiotherapist at the hospital. Waiting list could be 6-8 weeks long but hey It's progress!
Also speaking to a private chap on Sunday so that could be a possibility price dependant.

Worth getting to a private one just for diagnosis, may be something minor like IT Band syndrome

If you got the money, what bluerip00 charges is well worth it

Change of scenery today - working with the medical team at the Track World Cup. More burns and splinters than patellafemoral pain.

My knees have been painful for years, had blood tests done but nothing in there about why my knees are painful. Have been living with it since I was 16 playing basketball and now 31 the pain is still there but I guess I have learnt to live with it.
Pain seems to go alittle if I do stretching etc and feels like a relief on them when doing so, also bending them brings a relief to them.
Must get to the doc's but after going there 2-3 times and then having blood tests that shows nothing you get abit disheartened.

I think they were wanting to see if I had arthritis....
Nope not seen a physio, you have to be referred from your doc's don't you? I do have private care with my employer so maybe i will have to have a word about the next steps.

if stretching seems to help, perhaps a physio can help at least for a while. Should it still be arthritis, a well maintained flexible body could only be a good thing that will help you live better?
PM bluerip00 on here, he's great and in my opinion, is well worth the monies

Thanks for the heads up kboy...

no probs. I'm fully expecting to have knee pain from the age of 40 and onwards, my old man has it and my knees are already showing signs of it... trying to keep them healthy and sensibly exercised to minimise it

Thanks kboy.
Just a reminder that the clinic is recognised by all major health insurance companies. All we require is the authorisation code from them and to obtain this you need a referral from your GP.

Saw bluerip00 last night for an initial evaluation. Very thorough and well worth the time / money.
Been given a good stretching routine to work on for the next 4 weeks, a quick follow up evaluation and then a strengthening program.
Would highly recommend.

Tonight I'm planning on applying ibuprofen gel and using an ultra sound machine (someone I work with has a smaller one for running)
The pain is really starting to hurt even under the desk at work.

I set my bike up for an event this coming sunday (70km ride, not a "race") that should be fast paced being on a closed freeway and almost guaranteed tailwind. Changed to 81gi instead of my usual 68gi. Long story short I was chasing the lads on tuesday night and now my right knee has developed a feeling/pain in the anterior area. (back of knee, not behind knee cap). It is noticable when walking although not painful, and i cruisily rode my geared tourer the 24km to work today spinning to win. Made it in ok without much discomfort but if I push it the pain appears.
I have pretty much given up all hope of keeping a fast pace and realise the best i can expect is to simply go the distance, if I can do it at all.
Am dropping gear ratio back down to either 68 or 72, will drop saddle a little and move forward a little too and see how that goes. Taking multi-vits/minerals and protein supplement.
Any suggestions for how to get some kind of recovery before Sunday?

I still have pain when I push big gears, try to keep the cadence at around 90.
I've had pain for the last 2 days, still stretching as per normal, the only thing I can put it down to is the fact I've ran out of glucasomine so haven't been taking it. That would attribute towards it wouldn't it?

I was getting knee pain after about 45 minutes to an hour on my road bike. Tried various adjustments and nothing. Decided to do it properly and went to Adrian Timmis at Cadencesport for a proper fit.
2.5hours of work on the turbo, footbeds, shims. Changed position to 3cm longer, 4mm lower, adjusted seat angle, bar angle, lever position etc etc. Next day 5hours no pain. Best £135 I've spent.

Totally unrelated to the current chat, but my knee problem cleared up. It was after riding anything more than 30 miles that my knee would hurt (couldn't walk properly for two days after the Dynamo).
I tried different gear ratios, saddle adjustments, cleat adjustments, riding style, exercises... Turned out it was the frame. A medium (54cm) Langster Steel was the problem. Now riding my 55cm Leader I get no such pain no matter how far I ride.
Just thought it might help if someone else has tried everything else to no avail.
Again, I didnt read the whole thread and apols if ABP but:
Try a lower gear ratio if you ride fixed. I went from 48:16 to 46:18 and all my knee issues disappeared.
Obviously this aint the solution for everyone as we're all different builds and sizes but it worked for me on both my rides, ones with a front brake and a heavier frame, and ones brakeless with a nice lightweight steel frame (the yellow lo pro in my avatar). On brakeless fixies a lower ratio for me is essential to preserve knee longevity.
