Absolutely. He even had to set up his own production company, Infinitum Nihil, due to the majors backing down.
I thought the casting was great – just a weak script, and it just didn't translate from the book at all well.
There's several stories in The Great Shark Hunt that I think would have worked much better on screen.
There was talk at one time of Depp turning J.P Donleavy's classic The Ginger Man – one of Hunter's favourite books – into a film. not sure if it ever got off the ground though.
