^Sounds daft but I was thinking clothes.. Have you been wearing jeans with a tough seam or rivets etc? Something has roughed the surface up right from the word go by the looks of it.
That was going to be my original question, but being on a road bike I thought it was less likely to be jeans and maybe something else.... could be wrong though.

Nope. Only ever ridden in proper cycling clothes (either specialized winter tights with padded shorts underneath or some Rapha 3/4 winter bibs). The bike has guards so saddle not getting splattered in road crud and I'm a leisure cyclist ie not a commuter so only go out if it's not raining. It's been bloody cold for a lot of the rides though. I'm sure there is friction at the points that are worn but my sit bones are way further back on the saddle than where the wear is so its a mystery.
