I'm surprised there are 50 posts to answer this.
I'm surprised this thread exists at all

^ sure the bike would be actually "light", i.e. <10kg? or just light in the dutch understanding, like 15kg instead of 22?
I see no reason why a frame has to weigh 300% more just because of different angles -->> market niche
I have seen old roadsters in 531, so they did exist once, but they seem to be rare as hen's teeth.
The weight does help the ride comfort, and perhaps it helps with the centre of gravity when you load up the basket or rack.
Or maybe the weight of the tubing is of little consequence when you throw in the weight of a four speed dynamo hub, steel rod brakes, wide wheelrims, steel mudguards, etc. -

OMG!
Why is that?
best of all was linked on the Ridley facebook page - where I originally got it from - it caused quite some discussion to say the least!

Add a hoe, shovel, flask and paper then assume old bloke allotment riding style - max cadence 20 and rarely overtake a pedestrian. During warm weather merely stand on one pedal on the downhills and walk on the flats.

A garden tool or a prostitute?

nothing seems to make a difference to me fixed with 70gi, road bike, rigid mtb, freeride bike etc. Since lowering the stem on my road bike I have to race everywhere. On the fixie I spin everywhere, mtb I wheelie, and the free ride bike - I go in search of things to jump off.
Self control is the only way.
Or HTFU and get fit ;)

So fit people don't sweat then?

I've never even heard of a bike that sweats. What's his problem?

I switched from a 531 tourer to a vintage roadster. The roadster is heavier than the tourer. I sweat less on the roadster.
Anyone who thinks you must sweat more on a heavy upright bike than a lightweight road bike haven't tried it.

Did you switch in Autumn?

I vote for the Gazelle, I'm actually waiting for one to be delivered.
For those who say a heavy bike will make you sweat more, don't think about what sounds logical, look at what actually happens. What do Amsterdammers ride to work on? They don't have showers at work, they wear normal clothes to ride and they don't stink at the end of it.
A dutch style bike will make you go slow just because of the relaxed riding position.

Totally agree. I never break into a sweat when I use a cycle hire bike, they're so heavy and upright and undergeared that you don't bother putting as much effort in and trying to race everyone.

Racing is Life... everything else is just waiting.

They force you to work your tits off

Every time someone suggests that to avoid sweat you need a heavy bike... I face palm and wish that the device that could stab people over the internet had been created already.

Ed would be nursing injuries when new ones occur.

I think the key is you need to ride a bike which encourages you just to pootle along, rather than race around - my old Pashley pub/shopping bike is heavy, but is so comfy, and with the upright riding position encourages you to just cruise around everywhere - it has an 8 speed Sram hub gear, and can get up quite a head of steam, but i never break into a sweat on it, and i am an unfit bastard.

Did you switch in Autumn?
Nope, spring about 2 years ago. 6 mile commute with no need to shower at work in any season
OMG!
Why is that?
