I've taken the tow path all the way to Stanstead Abbotts the last time I went to Cambridge and it adds a LOT of time. We only made it to Cambridge by 7pm, leaving south London at 10am! Fortunately it was in summer so light til 9pm.
That said, the tow path s lovely and I imagine it won't be too busy this time of year. however it may be chock-a-block as soon as it gets a bit warmer as everyone realizes they can go outside again ! :-)
