Thanks papercrate, it is the width that is of interest to avoid knee pain. I noticed some SA FCT20 cranks on eBay for £35 new and I suspect new SA is better than risking 20+ year old Shimano aluminium. Isn't it? I have late 1970s and 1980s Shimano 600 Arabesque and FC-6207 cranks with Q factors of 140mm and 145mm both on 110mm BB which is great but I'm a little worried about their strength (or current strength to age ratio). I'm cheap too - mostly because the bicycle is often left locked up in town without me.
