I could be wrong but I'd imagine it would work on aperture priority because the automation should start from when the meter in the camera gets a light reading, the camera will change the shutter speed to suit. Shouldn't matter what's infront of the meter when it takes it's reading. Only problem I could see would be if the meter were somehow blocked by part of the lens.
