    The address you go back to contains an 'anchor' (the bit after # in the page address) to let your browser know where to automatically scroll to. The anchor will usually be the first unread post, as that's the link you clicked to load the page, so the browser sees that anchor again when you click back and goes to the relevant point in the page.
