"MTB shoes" is a description covering a wide range of footwear, but the better XC shoes are basically identical soles and uppers to corresponding road shoes plus some tread blocks and different drilling. The penalty compared with the equivalent road shoe is a bit more weight, and maybe a bit less roll stability due to the narrow pedal platform although that depends on exactly which pedals you compare and might not bother you anyway.
