• SBDU, Gerald O'donovan built Raleigh Panasonic road frame and forks, 531 Professional Tubing - 53cm st
    Campag dropouts.

    Serial number - SB 6944 53

Badly in need of a restoration, paint is original, but has been touched up badly and is in generally bad condition. One large dent in the toptube and a couple of small dings. Unfortunately, the headtube has some ovalisation (see pics)

I'm thinking of selling because i can't afford to lavish the money and love it needs to bring it back to it's former glory. Would like to know what people would pay considering the condition?

  • One for the mountainbikers perhaps...

I have a set of Brooklyn Machine Works Veggieburger pedals. Very light usage. Only been used on commuter. I can't really find much information on them. Any idea how much would be a fair price?

    pleaseandthankyou

  • hi, any old school single speedies around? ive a mid 90s kona cruiser im thinking of selling, not seen many about and just wanted sum info as to a price, its a kona a'ha, was pretty rare and expensive back in the day, seen few wanted posts few years ago but didnt wantt to get shot then, sadly its been in the loft for years and is a super ride so wasted, mines complete even has original chain ring and cranks etc, few nice period upgrades? any info apreciated, cheers guys.

  • Merged into correct thread in correct section.

  • Due to my bike recently being stolen and me having to find a new method of transport and furthermore having wanted to build my own fixie ever since I drove that of a friend of mine two years ago I wanted to start building my own fixie.

I bought myself a Raleigh Royal frame (pictures attached) for a bargain price through some connections but now am starting to get my doubts.
For one thing due to all the tiny bits I need to buy new the predicted costs are continously rising, secondly I actually don't know if I really want a modified touring/racing bike, thirdly I am starting to notice that I lack the expertise.
Fourthly, here in Germany parts are harder to come by and more expensive.

    So basically my question is:

What is my Frame worth in case I decide to chicken out and start with an easier project?
Paint not in excellent condition, no fork, and minor dent in upper tube.
    Horizontal dropouts.

  • i rode my raleigh royal round for a while as a fixed gear

but when i'd saved up enough cash i put it back together as it should be:

  • thanks dude but mines not like that i did see that on ebay. this is mine, original stars and sumink it was called lol, nearly original down to the project foorks and sun rims, all except upgrades, mega rare profile carbon bars, seat, and dx levers and rear brake.

  • Thanks, I think I can now safely say that I probably will try and resell the frame.

Can you give me a rough indicator for the price of frame ?

  • Without a fork, around £50.

  • Thanks again !

  • Raleigh Royals seem to be pretty sought-after bikes - take a look at this on ebay:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1985-Raleigh-Royal-25-Reynolds-531-touring-road-single-speed-frame-and-forks-/140680224229?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item20c131dde5#ht_500wt_1287

With a dent, and sans fork, maybe £40-50 in the UK?

They're really bloody nice frames - I eventually worked out that my mystery Raleigh touring frame is a 1984 Royal with canti mounts added later (hence being sold to me as a Randonneur) and it's great to ride - really smooth and comfortable.

Spotter, I'm sure I've asked before, but what mudguards are those?

  • Heh, Ideal Standard got there first - I guess two independent valuations makes £50 seem about right then.

  • no they did do a version with canti mounts, i've seen a few. The mudguards are RSP Cityplate's, i'll be getting shot of mine soon if you're interested, i'll be getting some honjo ones.

  • I have a Raleigh Touriste which is a slightly lower budget version but still a lovely frame.

  • @Spotter - Might be interested if Lae isn't

  • i'll let you know if i do sell them

  • ^ As far as I know, the only Royals that came with canti mounts are the late-model ones made in the early 90s - not that it really matters anyway.

  • the also tend to have pantographed seatstays right by the seat tube cluster

  • I think Raleigh only started doing that in the late 80s/early 90s - I've never seen it on an early 80s bike, anyway. The seatstay tops are scalloped like on your Royal. What dropouts does yours have, incidentally? Mine has Suntour, but I've got another Raleigh tourer with Campagnolo dropouts (I don't know what model it is).

  • Yeah i think its the post 87 ones that are different. mine has suntour dropouts and came with a sugino gt cranks and SunTour Cyclone II gears.
I'd like to get the triple version of that chainset but the seem to be hens teeth.

  • I've only ridden mine as singlespeed with placeholder parts - but in the 18 months since I bought the frame (!!) I've managed to collect a load of Campagnolo, MAFAC and TA parts to put on it - Shimano rear derailer though, unless I find a Campagnolo Rally cheap somewhere.

Yours looks great in that colour scheme - sadly mine was repainted metallic snot green by a framebuilder (who put his decals all over it), and I can't quite afford a respray just yet.

  • if the chrome is good underneath shouldn't be a very expensive paint job, its only 2 colour

  • Heh, perhaps - it's not really worth me thinking about right now anyway. I'd DIY it but my compressor seems to have broken.

  • Considering selling my whip, got it on a trade so not too sure as to it's worth....

    Frame-Alan track, think 56 ctc
    Forks-Alpina Carbon, 1"
Wheels-Dura Ace 7600, double fixed, low flange, 32h on open pro (NJS)
    Cranks-Dura Ace 7600, 48t DA c'ring (NJS)

That's the guts of it, udder bits include a faux carbon seatpost and SLR, shitty GT or charge stem and a choice of bars...I'll probably sell it without pedals but could sort something if it was a deal breaker.

Here's it in a past carnation (Ignore the fugly bars), it's in much much better condition overall than it looks in the photo too, no cracks, dents, minimal scratches, ect.
