I've got about 1cm of neoprene stacked on the end of my mallet, works pretty well. I used a big lump of balled up denim before but it just got in the way. I found myself holding onto the lump instead of the pole when handling the ball, which meant I had a lot less control. Champagne cork sounds good though.
