A few of us in Brighton use these little rubber caps that our local hardware store sells. They're meant to be for the end of curtain poles apparently.. but they look more like the rubber door stoppers. Anyway, they fit really well just placed over the top of the pole, they're light and really comfortable. For added security you can incorporate them into your grip when wrapping your mallet. I'll bring some up to London next time, or have a look for some at your local hardware store.
