  • Forks from Yeahnerdz arrived today, along with some other parts. Popped it together to get a feel for size. Bars are temp, everything else isn't. I'll be breaking out the paint stripped on Saturday :)

  • It may also be too small.
    Time will tell.

I nearly bought it first time round on ebay - decided it was too large. Looks good though, be nice to see what you do with it!

  • got the new 'hood whip' project
    Colnago Master MTB

I am putting Campagnolo Racing Triple on it, as will be used in an urban environment, rather than offroading

the old 'hoody' will be listed shortly if anyone's interested

Looking good man! Glad the forks fit nicely!

  • It looks sad currently:

Congrats on the bike and thankyou for the PM on this.
I may be joining the Quantum club this weekend.

looks like the frame i missed out on buying from Hilary stone?

  • Trying out the flipped north road(ish) bars with my new newbalm tape.

Using a cross top at the top of the bars and the braking is hideous. So I really need to try and get some old road brakes. Which means I'll get to test how reusable the cloth tape is. Also I've forgotten how much these particular bars annoy me. They're a funny size, bar plugs don't fit (hence the corks), normal brakes don't fit, they creak, etc....

    Tossing up getting either:

    Soma Noah's arch

    actual north roads:

    Nitto's

I also like the idea of the low drop of the soma 3-speed. (lots of bars in Gags thread: http://www.lfgss.com/thread16416.html ). Does anyone have lots of experience of these type of bars, and can anyone make any particular recommendations?

  • Keep the bars, fit these:

  • Might not fit though... (just read the size bit).

  • Yep. That was the original plan way back. It's a real pain.

On the creaking someone said putting a thin lay of grease around the clamp section of the bar, thoughts?

The Nitto is for drop bar brakes, so regular brakes may not fit properly.

I got some lying around for you to try.

Another one is the Nitto Albatross and the Soma Lauterwasser

  • and the Soma Lauterwasser

I need something like this with an old clamp size, "obsolete british 23.8" says Sheldon... I know ebay is my friend, but in case someone has something they don't need...

  • Cheers.

OK, I've just realised that the Nitto Moustache is not the Nitto Albatross.

The difference is, the Albatross is for normal brakes, and the Moustache is for drop brakes. Are they both 26.0mm? TBH I prefer the idea of drop brakes.

If I could borrow the Moustache bar's that would be really cool. I'll drop you a PM in a bit.

  • Exactly, and I got the Nitto Albatross bar, really really nice shape, it's great upside down too, expensive thought

    both are 26 AFAIK.

I don't think so, I won it on eBay the other week from a guy in Leicester. Claims he bought it in 1973 (second hand) from Sid Mottram's in Leicester - one of their own frames which in the 60's were built for them by Mercian. The pointed lugs and wrap-over seat stay looks similar to the King of Mercia from the same era (though the seat stay is a little more "basic" looking).

It also looks a little like Zouo's Henry Burton, although his seat stays are a lot more skinny!

I've got the cheap Raleigh North Road bars on my Pompetamine, and they are comfortable enough for short rides up to 30 miles. Took a few goes to get the angle ight, as the wrist angle changes quite a bit as you rotate them in the clamp, so don't dismiss them if they don't work first ride.

  • Don't forget the stem length too, Nitto Moustache may required a shorter stem to compensate.

  • how have they mounted that light? Is there a specific mount you can use for old light brackets, or is it just clamped on the forks?

Have you been shaving your legs in preparation of the great commuter races of 2012?

  • Rich coming from someone who got himself a custom hybrid.

  • I notice that wasn't a denial ;)

Yes. I found that before, but ended up flipping them back to the normal/cruiser way up.

At the moment, with mine I'm finding the opposite - ie that I need a longer stem than I would have on say drops.

...it all seems a bit too much to think about on a beater :( But then this is an amazingly good frame, and with the ahead and carbon forks it rides like a dream.... just need to sort the headset out properly as some point.

Those old steel fork have a light mount on it, I reckon a simple bit of DIY to make it fit.

    or an expensive solution;

  • This one is almost finished, set up as fixed. Maybe I'll build it up with gears some day.
