  • I used to get the film developed and scanned, used the scans almost as a contact sheet and scanned the keepers myself.

    The scans I used to get from the minilab are generally grainy because of all the automatic settings, plus have moire or interpolation (I think that's the right word?) to sharpen details or create the illusion of higher resolution. They also have way less of a dynamic range because the machine does similar to an "Auto Levels" and "Auto Colour" in Photoshop and crushes the blacks and blows out the highlights.

    Jessops used to be the absolute worst, there's a department of Cambridge University called PandIS which was slightly better.
