Just to throw my 2p in to the upthread row, I used clips and straps until I was 15, switched to the double ended (XT) SPD pedals (the other option was LX, which only had the spring at the back) and have never had case to regret it.
Kick the pedal and you are attached firmly to the bike- what's not to like?
Clips and straps have their place on retro builds that would look odd with clipless, but using them now is an affectation in many ways- a deliberate use of a more cumbersome, less efficient technology. On road bikes that is- I can see the point for the round town commuter who wants to wear one pair of shoes, I should add.
