• How old does a car have to be before it's eligible for classic car insurance?

Depends on the insurer and the policy
Some are 10 years. If there is an owner's club there's usually a scheme through Peter Best or Lancaster.
Most insist on a garage, most are limited mileage and most don't demand or accrue no-claims bonuses.

If you want a decent car with low premiums it is cheaper to buy and insure a scooter or moped as your main vehicle and insure the car on a classic policy.
