  • This morning I broke out the soldering iron and set about upgrading my Squier Jazz fretless bass. I picked this up from EBay a while ago, and had never been that happy with the look of the thing. The scratch plate was knackered looking, and amateurishly chopped around the pickups. It also had extra holes for a long departed pickup cover. It didn't match up to the control plate either.
The other problem with the bass was that it was hard wired to have both pickups active. It had a stacked blend pot which the previous owner had bypassed because, as I found out when I tried to reinstate it, it just didn't work. I wanted proper controls anyway, with 2 volume and 1tone. So armed with 3 genuine Fender 250k solid shaft pots to replace the cheap originals, the correct cap, a new Fender control plate, a new black pearl scratch plate and a new set of flatwounds, I ended up with this:

It sounds great, everything works, and I am so pleased with the result
