My lower back is very sensitive to saddle height- slightly too high (so my hips start to rock left/right when pedalling ever so slightly) and if I do 30+ miles I'll have real issues standing up straight when i get off the bike.
The knee thing sounds like too big a gear- any idea what sort of cadence you are averaging?
