As the cartridges are going to be thrown away you could try to remove the seals, (tip of a penknife blade) flush all the crap out of the bearing, get everything nice and clean pack with nice fresh grease replace the seals and reinstall.. usually all the grittiness is rust as much from the races as anything else.
If there is a lot of corrosion try soaking overnight in coca cola (the real thing, an the only time I would recommend buying the stuff) which would get rid of all the rust. Then flush it out and grease it. They will certainly work for a while longer, often with a good dose of grease, for ages. And you have nothing to lose.
Try also typing the bearing serial number into google, occasionally that will send you to bearings direct or similar which is often a massive saving.
