  • The headset bearings on my road bike are dead/dying. Its a standard 1 1/8th integrated headset in a Pinarello FP2.

I've taken the steerer stack apart to get access to the cartridge bearings. I can confirm that both upper and lower are gritty and there is some evidence of rust leakage from the lower cartridge. They both need replacing.

The problem is that both sets of cartridges are stuck fast in the head tube. I have tried applying some penetrating fluid and tapping increasingly less gently around each bearing from the other side of the head tube with a dowel and hammer with no sign of any movement. I have also attempted to carefully lever from the same side of the head tube with a screwdriver I am at the point that I do not want to start whacking or levering away any harder for fear of damaging my head tube.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how I can remove them or shall I take the whole kit and caboodle to my friendly LBS? I'd much prefer to tackle the problem myself simply because I like learning how to do things but if there is a risk of me damaging my frame then I will clearly be happy to hand over to an expert...
